Can’t say enough good things about this stay! The staff were incredibly kind and accommodating. They have a service where they will pick up your luggage from the train station. The rooms are very cozy and have really sweet homey touches. Just loved it! Only wish we could’ve stayed longer. Location was great as well!

We absolutely adore this hotel. We’ve stayed her many, many times whilst visiting our daughter who’s at University here in York. The hotel is modern and luxurious and effortlessly stylish. The rooms are beautifully appointed and have quaint finishing touches. The beds are divine, with exquisite bedding and gorgeous mattresses, we always sleep so well. We love that it’s a short stroll into the centre of town, and that all the attractions are on our doorstep. Anna, the restaurant manager is fabulous and along with Nathalie they helped us arrange a fabulous graduation champagne reception followed by dinner in The Pearly Cow. Nothing was too much trouble they were both so fab! We now can’t wait to try the other hotels in the group and will certainly be back to No 1 which now has a special place in our hearts. Thank you to the team for such wonderful hospitality.

Great location. Fabulous old building which has had an innovative refurbishment. The first big positive was the excellent breakfast, where the food and service were both faultless. I also liked the pantry, offering complimentary soft drinks, snacks and cake for you to help yourself during the day. We booked very last minute so could only choose between the 2 smallest rooms - our room (25) was 18m square at the very top of the house with a cabin bed. It had everything we needed and was very quiet, even with the window open overnight, so I would recommend requesting a room at the back of the building as other reviews commented the road noise was intrusive. There was a fan in the room, which was sufficient for our needs, but in the height of summer the lack of air con would likely have been an issue. The hotel prides itself on providing a vinyl selection in every room with a record player - the player in our room was not working. Not a big deal but I wonder how long that had been the case. I have given 4/5 stars in the main because the welcome from reception staff was a little lack lustre.

The hotel is truly beautiful with great attention to detail. I stayed for two nights, and my room was near the stairs—unfortunately, both nights were disrupted by late-night stomping noises, possibly from guests or staff. The second night was particularly busy, and I ended up having to raise a complaint. I had booked a spa package upon arrival. While the massage was relaxing, it didn’t quite feel like a full 60 minutes—more like 45 minutes of actual treatment. Afterward, my lunch was delayed by over 30 minutes. The staff did offer a complimentary drink to make up for it, which I really appreciated. The rooms are lovely with thoughtful touches, though they feel a bit cramped. That said, the table fan provided was enough to keep cool during the hot weather. Despite the few negatives, I’m still giving 4 stars because the staff were genuinely polite, attentive, and eager to help. And a big plus—the free pantry is a fantastic perk!
