Highlights

The Property – A lovingly restored country manor

Discover the charms and geological sites of Mount Gambier, the second largest town in South Australia and the heart of the state’s Limestone Coast. Perfectly positioned between the state capitals of Melbourne and Adelaide, this country town is dotted with heritage buildings, shops, cafés and restaurants – but it’s the natural wonders that will leave you dazzled. From the sapphire waters of the Blue Lake to the underground Garden of Eden in the Umpherston Sinkhole, Mount Gambier hides beauty around every corner. Discover it all from a heritage launchpad: the blissfully private Delgattie Estate.

Originally built in 1902, Delgattie Estate is one of the most iconic buildings in Mount Gambier. Its history is as impressive as its beautifully decorated halls, which boast spectacular chandeliers, vintage touches, oak tables, antique furniture and carefully restored fireplaces. Originally part of ‘Canavan’s Paddock’, the estate was founded by local accountant Alexander Walker, who built a single-storey dolomite and limestone residence after purchasing two allotments at auction. New livestock saleyards were built directly in front of the home where The Commodore restaurant is now situated.

Surrounded by lush gardens and offering just three, individually designed suites – each with its own ensuite, sitting room and private access – exclusivity and romance abound in this gorgeous property. When you are ready to mingle, head to the Spher Billiard Lounge & Balcony to sip a drink and play a round of billiards on the Melbourne-crafted Alcocks Barrel Leg table – part of the property since the 1920s.

Your Handpicked Inclusions Daily breakfast and a warm welcome with wine and cocktails

Celebrate on arrival with a welcome cocktail each served against a picturesque Frew Park backdrop at Commodore on the Park before retreating to your suite to enjoy a bottle of Delgattie Estate Private Label wine.

Each morning, you can decide whether you prefer to have breakfast in the privacy of your suite with a hamper delivered to your door, or to make the most of your daily A$50 credit per room towards breakfast at Commodore on the Park restaurant.

Dining upgrade: Elevate your stay with A$100 dining credit per package to spend at The Commodore restaurant and indulge in an extensive menu of seasonal delights and chef specialities, complemented by some of Coonawarra’s best wines. Spend a leisurely lunch overlooking the sun-kissed Frew Park while you tuck into an à la carte menu (available Monday to Friday) or indulge in a spectacular seasonal, two or three-course feast (available Saturday and Sunday). Why not tuck into a starter of Berkshire pork croquettes dolloped with fennel cream, before sinking your teeth into a signature wagyu steak or soy-glazed roasted pumpkin? This is an unmissable dining experience when visiting Mount Gambier.

What an absolutely beautiful place to stay. It was so different to any other places we've stayed. The furnishings were amazing, antique furniture and beautifully decorated. Breakfast was fabulous. Would highly recommend and would stay again.

Oh my! This boutique guest house is stunning. From the moment you walk into the grand entrance hall you just know you are in for a treat! The Hay Suite we stayed in had the most glorious bathroom with beautiful blue subway tiles and white marble floor tiles (with underfloor heating!!) and a lot of attention has been paid to period fittings but all new so you get the look without the problems. A lovely sitting room complete with gas log fire and wing-backed chairs which made sitting a reading a book on a cold, wet day truly pleasurable (don't worry there is ducted airconditioning throughout as well). The bedroom was spacious and the bed was like sleeping on a soft cloud. The guest rooms are located on the ground floor which makes it very accessible and we were made to feel very welcome when checking in. The house is located close to the main street and walking distance to restaurants, pubs and shops. I would not hesitate to recommend this glorious accommodation and look forward to any opportunity to stay there again.

The property is absolutely stunning, as are the details in the room. The styling and all the little things like welcome card, underfloor heating in the bathroom, make up towel and mirror, herbal teas, plush linen, standalone bath and private sitting room were just beautiful. Everything is so grand and it's ideally located. A perfect stay in a beautiful town. Highly recommend!

A beautiful place to stay if you are looking for something out of the ordinary. It's a lovely old renovated building that looks good inside and out but is better suited to special stays such as weddings and events. We were given a three room suite that looked fabulous, but their set up made the bedroom and bathroom crowded and with a lack of room for luggage and toiletries. We breakfasted at the associated Motel next door and this was enjoyable. Our arrival timing was spot on and we were pointed to the empty single garage which was great the next morning as the early morning fog had not iced up our car windows.
